Writers and Readers…

I would like to thank everyone who came out to MVRWA’s Book Lover’s Event this year.

We had an amazing turnout!

Many impatient attendees, shocked us by showing up early and forming a line before we opened the doors at 10:00 am. You came early, and stayed to the very end.

I was reminded, again, of a couple of points that I think can be easily forgotten as we writer tirelessly tap, tap, tap away on the keyboard.

1) If not for the readers, there would be no reason for us to do what we do. Thank you to all of those who long to read what we write, and let us know what you enjoy.

2) Many, many readers are writers waiting to be born. Toward the end of the day, the moderator of our second Q&A panel asked the question, “How many people here are aspiring writers.” Discounting members of our group, at least twenty hands went in the air.  This was reinforced by all the great questions that were asked to both panels.

I also have one more big thanks to all of our members, who pitched in and made the event run seamlessly smooth. All of you rocked it out!!

Big Joy in Little Groups

It’s not a new idea. I spend a lot of time talking about how I much I love and value my local Romance Writers of America (RWA) chapter on these pages.

yay-6892974

I was reminded again of how important these people are to me at our most recent meeting this weekend.

January is always a fun meeting. As we substitute our December Meeting for an early December holiday party it is often two months since many of us have seen each other.

Don’t think we ignore business, we always have a full agenda to attend to, but we also make sure we have time to catch up on each others lives and plan for our writing year ahead of us.

I’m sure that larger chapters have their positives as well, but for me I love that I am part of a chapter where everyone knows each other by name, where we all know which sub-genres everyone writes and what markets they are targeting. I love being part of a group that shares information and offers shoulders to lean on as needed.

For me, my small chapter is a perfect fit.

Network Power

To all my friends and readers on the east cost being effected by Hurricane Sandy, you are in my thoughts this week. Please check in and let me you know you’re doing okay when you can.

This weekend at my local RWA (Romance Writers of America) chapter’s meeting, we celebrated our twentieth anniversary in a  private, yet powerful, way. (A public celebration to come in a few months.) It was so enlightening to hear the stories of how our group was formed, the struggles they faced, and they foundation they laid for the chapter I later joined and is so dear to my heart.

We went around the room and each took a few minutes to talk about what brought us to RWA and MVRWA and what’s kept us there.

No surprise to those of you who read these pages regularly, because I’ve said it often here about myself, but there was a common thread that the group is not only a wealth of information  but an amazing source of support. Over and again our members said when they were looking for information on what an aspiring writer should do, they were directed to find a writer’s group that they felt connected to.

It is the same advice I give when I’m asked.

As anyone can attest to, when facing a difficult task, it’s helpful to know that you have a connection to people who have traveled the rough road before you, who can draw you a map and give you some direction. Those same people will help you back on your feet when you fall, and cheer loudly when you succeed.

So, I raise my glass to MVRW. Though I’ve only been around for a slim slice of that time, the knowledge and support I’ve gained has been unmeasurable. Here’s to many, many more anniversaries.

A Writing Community / Fairyproof Around the Web

Things were quiet around here this weekend, because my Romance Writer’s of America chapter (MVRWA) had our annual Brainstorming Weekend. Eleven of us rented a cottage on Whompler’s Lake in the Irish Hills of Michigan. We locked ourselves in, helped each other plot books, lent support, shared wisdom and wrote a LOT of pages.

Anyone who’s spent any time at all on this blog, knows how I feel about my writing community. You ladies (and Ray) are the best! Thank you for an amazing time, lots of laughs, and some amazing food. It felt incredible to be able to immerse myself in the craft and the community of writing,
  • On Thursday, September 20, I had a guest post over at Paranormal Cravings. Head over to their site to read about the paranormal, not only in my writing but my real experiences.
  • On Friday, September 21,  Amber Garr: The Evolution of a Muse  interviewed me and reviewed Fairyproof. “Constance has created a believable world that any urban fantasy fan would surely enjoy.” Is a quote from her four conch review. Check out Amber’s site to read the interview and the rest of the review.
  • On Saturday, September 22, I had a guest blog at What the Cat Read. Head over to that blog to read my post about Romance Everlasting.
  • On Saturday, September 22, Reviews By Molly gave Fairyproof a “four book” review. In her review, Molly says, “This interesting take on Fairies, Councils, good and evil is definitely worthy of 4 Books! I totally fell in love with Daniel and Monique and really loved their story! The ending left me wanting more of their story and I can’t wait to read more of Ms. Phillips’ work!”  Please go to her site to read the entire review.

What I Read: Write It Down Make It Happen

This book was recommended to me by MVRWA chapter-mate, Jill Kemerer at our annual brainstorming event. I’ve heard the principle before and have to admit being skeptical that writing something down actually encourages it to happen for you.

But that was because I didn’t really understand the principal.

When people tried to explain the concept to me before it was represented as sending a wish out to the universe, and then waiting for something mystical to wave a magic wand and grant it. That doesn’t quiet jive with me, though.

I believe in working hard for what you want.

But when I began reading the book, I learned about the science behind it. The author talks about how the act of writing down your deepest wishes, plants those ideas a little deeper in your brain.  It makes the concept something more tangible. The book promised you will find yourself thinking about those goals you wrote down, and you will subconsciously begin doing everything you can to make them come true.

I was just too intrigued to not give it a try.

It’s a bit too soon to see if my two test goals will be achieved yet, but I have noticed a change in my attitude. In those rare occasions that I have quiet moments, my mind wanders to those written goals. When I try to clear away the clutter in my mind, what’s left is what I can do next to get a step closer to my dream.

The promise that writing it down, would make it more real to me was fulfilled.

I pass this book on to my readers here with the same enthusiasm that it was recommended to me.

Thanks, Jill.
